Jimmy Fretwell: OBA Artist in Residence

The Oregon Bluegrass Association is proud to announce the launch of its new Rural Oregon Artist in Residence program—an initiative designed to bring live music, education, and creative exchange to rural communities that don’t often find themselves on traditional touring routes. Kicking off this ambitious effort is Ashland-based musician Jimmy Fretwell, who will spend May 11–18 in Shaniko, Oregon, setting the tone for a season rooted in connection, creativity, and rural resilience.

Fretwell’s residency is based in the historic town of Shaniko, where wide-open landscapes and quiet streets offer both inspiration and reflection. During his stay, he will visit three local music classes, providing students with hands-on learning opportunities and a chance to engage directly with a working musician. These visits reflect a core mission of the program: to ensure that rural youth have access to meaningful arts education experiences.

Beyond the classroom, Fretwell will bring his music to the broader community. On May 15, he will perform an evening show at Maupin’s beloved Riverside venue, celebrating the debut of its new outdoor stage, then represent the Oregon Bluegrass Association the following morning in the Maupin Daze Parade, further embedding the residency into the fabric of local culture. Informal jam sessions hosted in Shaniko throughout the week will create additional space for community members—musicians and listeners alike—to gather, share, and participate.

Importantly, the residency also allows Fretwell time to write and reflect. Shaniko’s unique character as a quiet “Wild West” town offers an ideal backdrop for songwriting, reinforcing the program’s commitment not only to performance and outreach, but also to artistic development.

Fretwell was selected as the inaugural artist for his deep roots in the region, his approachable teaching style, and his ability to connect authentically with audiences of all ages. His blend of musicianship and community-mindedness makes him a natural fit to help launch a program built on trust, accessibility, and shared experience.

While Fretwell is the first to participate, he won’t be the last. The Oregon Bluegrass Association has up mutliple residencies later this year, including visits from Tuesday String Band and the nationally acclaimed Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen. Each artist will bring their own style and perspective, expanding the reach and impact of the program across different communities.

The Rural Oregon Artist in Residence program aims to do more than present performances—it seeks to build lasting relationships. By bringing affordable live music to rural towns, offering educational workshops, and introducing musicians to the richness of Central and Eastern Oregon, the program highlights venues that are as unique as the communities they serve. From the historic Liberty Theatre in Condon to the Shaniko Schoolhouse, these spaces become gathering points for culture and connection.

Looking ahead to the program’s wrap-up in October, the anticipated impact is both tangible and meaningful: live music brought to four rural counties, audiences totaling more than 1,000 people, workshops reaching at least 50 young learners, and—perhaps most importantly—a seed planted. That seed represents a growing appreciation for live music, a strengthened sense of community, and a foundation for continued artistic engagement long after the residency ends.

With Jimmy Fretwell leading the way, the Rural Oregon Artist in Residence program begins not just as a series of events, but as the start of something enduring—an investment in the cultural life of rural Oregon that promises to resonate far beyond a single season.

Jimmy Fretwell will take residence in Shaniko, Oregon May 11-18, 2026 as part of the Oregon Bluegrass Association’s Rural Artist in Residence Program.
